We go off the grid today at noon.  We cast our lines and leave this lovely marina, Le Phare Bleu.  We are setting sail to the western side of Grenada where we will anchor for the night.  Tomorrow we will pull anchor and sail to Carriacou, the northerly most island of Grenada.  We will meet Ben and Deb in Carriacou who are joining us for a leisurely 4 week cruise up the island chain to St Lucia.  Deb and MAKK provisioned the boat as only they could do:  we will not starve or run out of wine or rum.

We will fly home from St. Lucia for a two week visit to Elizabeth City and fly back to St. Lucia with Bobby and his daughter, Brandy and Brandy's husband, Joey.  Next up, Bobby and crew depart in Guadeloupe and Matt and Emily join us or a 10 day cruise departing May 9th in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands.  We have no scheduled passengers after that.

Matt and Emily are new friends we bonded with first on line and then in France where we and other new Fountaine Pajot owners went to the Paris Boat Show and then went to La Rochelle with our dealer to tour the factory, visit Cognac, and other really nice activities.  Matt and Emily have sold their home and purchased a 50 foot Fountaine Pajot. They have never sailed (excluding a one week crash course in California) and are planning to sail around the world starting with a long tour of the Mediterranean.  I thought I was ballsy but these two have nerve and vision.  I am sure they will run into early problems but I am confident that if they hang in there they will do just fine.

The christening happened at 9:20 AM.  We were there at the crack of dawn to see them raise the boom, then the mast.  Following that, the huge lift motored into place and hauled her to the harbor and splashed her in. We did not waste a bottle of champagne as that would be alcohol abuse.  Instead we went to our favorite wine store later that morning and ordered 5 cases of French wine to haul back to the Caribbean.

I have been in France for over a month and living on the boat since December 21st.  Finally we are to depart from La Rochelle tonight. Michelle, the forth member of the crew, arrived today. His picture below. He is getting a tour of the boat. Then we are off to dinner and then we set sail with the tide.  We are targeting Gijon on the north coast of Spain.  It will take two days.  We are expecting another front otherwise we would try to round the headland toward Portugal.  We will most likely hold up in Gijon until the front passes.  At least it will be a change of scenery.  You can follow along by opening Course and Location and clicking the URL.

Saba, lovely Saba

We arrived at Saba on Sunday 14th. What a wonderful experience!  The view of the island from the sea is ruggedly breathtaking.  Rising vertically from the ocean to an elevation of 3,084 ft., Saba is raw volcanic rock at its base soaring to lush verdant tropical greenery. The central mountain, Mt Scenery, is perpetualy covered with inspiring cloud formations.  We crossed from St Eustatius in  18-24 knots of wind with 5-6 foot following seas. Anchoring overnight in Wells Bay we had strong winds but relatively calm seas overnight with Tropicbirds chattering overhead. Add caption Today we toured Saba with Wayne, a native Sabian of 8 generations. This is a relatively unknown place due to its inaccessibility. It is, hoowever, very special. The main town is The Bottom which should be named Bottoms Up since that is the only way to get there. Dutch owned Saba is orderly, tidy and picturesque.
